KS2 Outdoor Learning: Life as a Viking

10th Nov 2025

Last week, KS2 swapped their classroom for the great outdoors and stepped back in time to the age of the Vikings!

Armed with imagination and slightly soggy coats, our young Norsemen and women set out to create their very own Viking houses using natural materials scavenged from our school grounds.

As true hunters and gatherers, they foraged for wooden pallets, branches, hay and anything else that looked remotely useful. They quickly realised that building a sturdy Viking home takes more than enthusiasm and a few sticks! Soon, our school field was alive with bustling Viking “villages,” complete with tribes fiercely protecting their homes from neighbouring raiders.

To improve their designs, the children learned the art of trading, swapping materials and resources to suit their homes and help strengthen their structures. Negotiations were lively and creative, with some very persuasive Viking merchants emerging!

As the inevitable rain began to fall (a truly authentic Viking experience), our mini settlers reflected on what life must have been like in Viking times; no heating, no cosy cushions, and definitely no hot chocolate. Safe to say, everyone agreed that their modern, warm homes were the preferred longhouse of choice!

It was a fun, muddy, and memorable day of outdoor learning, full of teamwork, creativity, and just a touch of Viking mischief!
