KS2 Set Sail on a Viking Voyage!

10th Nov 2025

Before the Halloween break, KS2 embarked on a hands-on design and technology project inspired by their WAU topic. The challenge was to design and build a Viking longship using recycled materials, applying creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills along the way.

We began by researching the features of Viking longships, learning how their narrow, curved shape helped them travel quickly through water and how the Vikings relied on both sails and oars to navigate across rough seas. Using this knowledge, we carefully planned our own models, considering which materials would float, how to balance weight, and how to construct a design that was both strong and stable.

Working in teams, we brought our ideas to life using recycled materials. We tested, adjusted and collaborated just as real Viking shipbuilders might have done.

Once the ships were ready, it was time to put them to the test! Using a small body of water and a hairdryer to simulate wind power, we re-enacted Viking voyages, watching to see which designs could stay afloat and travel the furthest. We also measured how far each longship travelled, comparing distances and recording results.

Afterwards, we reflected on our results, discussing why some ships were more successful than others. We considered the science behind floating and sinking, the importance of balance and shape, and how the Vikings must have faced similar challenges when building their own vessels for long journeys across the sea.

This project combined history, science, and design technology, helping pupils to deepen their understanding of Viking life while developing practical problem-solving and teamwork skills. We all had plenty of fun along the way!
