Year 3, 4 and 5 had lots of fun today carrying out a science investigation with raisins. In our science enquiry groups we wrote up an experiment outling equipment, method and what we discovered.
Experiment name: Dancing Raisins
Equipment: Raisins, still water, fizzy water and two clear plastic cups.
Method:
- First, carefully pour some still water into a clear, plastic cup.
- Gently, drop a raisin into the water.
- Next, pour some fizzy water into a different clear, plastic cup.
- Gently drop a raisin into the water.
We discussed the two different reactions.
What we discovered
The Science Bit
In the still water cup, the raisin sank because the raisin is denser than the water.
In the fizzy water cup, the raisin is again denser than the water. However, the bubbles got trapped in the grooves of the raisin, helping it to float back to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the raisin sinks back down.
