Viking Measuring in KS2!

23rd Oct 2025

Last week, KS2 put their measuring skills to the test in a very exciting way! As part of our Viking topic, we set out to discover just how big Viking longboats and longhouses really were and to see how they compared to our very own school!

Armed with tape measures and teamwork, the pupils explored different parts of the school building and playgrounds, carefully measuring lengths, widths, and perimeters. There was lots of problem solving and discussion as we worked out whether a Viking longboat could actually fit through our school gates (spoiler alert: it would be a very tight squeeze!).

Out on the playground, we even drew out the size of a real Viking sail — it was amazing to see just how huge it would have been! The children loved bringing maths and history together in such a hands-on way, and it really helped us imagine what life might have been like for the Vikings who sailed the seas many years ago.
